Mizzis Horrocks’ class of seven year olds is about to perform their nativity play at Flint Street Junior School for the proud mums and dads – and the occasional social worker. And then the stick insect escapes…

Tim Firth wrote the TV film, The Flint Street Nativity, inspired by his experience as a five year old, denied the part of Joseph in his class Nativity play. This meant that he missed the chance of holding the hand of the girl playing Mary, who he fancied, but who loved his best friend! Now adapted for the stage with the addition of well known carols (though not always with the well known lyrics), this hilarious, and often touching, play “exposes the snake-pit of paediatric power- politics” in the staging of an infant class Nativity.

Playing ages can be flexible but need, realistically, to be within the range of 20 – 50 to be convincing as a parent of an infant school child. Ability to sing Christmas Carols with gusto and enthusiasm  – to any level – essential.

Playing ages:  6 to 7 (or 8) and 20 – 50’ish…

The Girls:

MARY (F): Neat and tidy, always the first to put her hand up and eager to please.

GABRIEL (F): Plotting to steal Mary’s role. Rules her group of henchwomen like a mafia godfather.

ANGEL (F): GABRIEL’s misguidedly loyal follower.. Terrified of falling from GABRIEL’s favour.

SHEPHERD (F): Brutally factual girl who lives on a farm.

WISE GOLD (F): A nice girl from poor family, another follower of GABRIEL.

The Boys:

WISE FRANKINCENSE (M): A shy boy with a lisp, which makes his given role all the crueller.

INNKEEPER (M): A quiet, sinister figure. Everyone is scared of the INNKEEPER; he’s the type who pulls the legs off spiders.

HEROD/JOSEPH (M): Sports-obsessed daydreamer who spends much of his time in his own little world playing Question of Sport.

NARRATOR (M): Desperate to get his performance right and impress his parents.

STAR (M): Slightly geeky, obsessed with space, science and his uncle who ‘works at NASA’.

ASS (M): Shabby boy from the ‘special unit’. Wears a cardboard donkey head throughout and is overjoyed with it. Slightly shouts most things.
