Located at Beckenham Theatre on Bromley Road, our Children’s Theatre (for children aged 8-13) meets every Saturday morning in term-time, and teaches a vast array of stage skills, from movement and projection, to singing and dancing, through a variety of improvisations, games and other activities.
The Beckenham Theatre Youth Group (for teenagers aged 13-18) meets every Thursday evening in term-time and continues to build on the lessons learned at the children’s theatre. They are encouraged to express themselves through drama, dance and song, and learn important skills for anyone interested in the performing arts.
Unlike many drama clubs for young people, our youth group and children’s theatre learn to perform on a full working stage – in fact, Beckenham Theatre is the smallest full theatre in the UK, complete with fly loft. Unusually, there is also charge for classes, as the groups are led by experienced volunteers (though members with children involved in these groups pay an extra £10 per year in membership).
The Children’s Theatre was first formed in 1948, and has continued to be a vital part of Beckenham Theatre ever since. Our younger members have the opportunity to perform in two dedicated productions each year, timed to coincide with the May and October half terms, and auditions are open to Children’s Theatre and Youth Group attendees, as well as new faces.
If you, or a member of your family would like to join one of these groups, please email Fiona (including your child’s name and date of birth), to be added to the waiting list.
Please note that a huge amount of (voluntary) work goes into running the children’s and youth groups, and it is expected that parents of children involved will support the theatre by attending as many shows and social functions as possible, as well as helping out backstage, with costumes or chaperoning duties as necessary.
Dates for youth group and children’s theatre workshops can be found on the calendar.
